Romance literature—particularly with diverse characters, perspectives, and endings—offers a radical space where readers, especially those marginalised or oppressed, can envision a world that isn’t governed by harsh binaries or rigid control.
When we create and consume stories that affirm love, self-worth, choice, and happy endings, we are challenging narratives of repression and limitation.
And in times when the political climate leans heavily toward restricting freedoms, such stories become all the more vital.
Writing inclusive romance is feminist because it acknowledges the emotional depth, autonomy, and humanity of everyone, especially those whom systems of power would rather see silenced.
It’s not just entertainment: it’s empowerment.
Romance prioritises personal agency and intimacy, honouring people’s right to experience connection on their terms.
For women, LGBTQIA+ folks, and anyone whose very existence is threatened by regressive political agendas, romance offers a vision of love and joy outside the confines of patriarchal approval.
Our stories tell readers: You, too, deserve a happy ending.
In a world where people are battling for bodily autonomy, self-expression, and simply the right to exist without fear, this message is revolutionary.
And it’s important that we don’t stop creating it, because escapist content, like romance, builds resilience.
It keeps people hopeful, which in turn keeps people in the fight.
When you show diverse and authentic characters experiencing and giving love freely, you’re nurturing a community of readers who believe in a world where that’s possible in real life, too.
To stand and fight means to keep producing, promoting, and celebrating these stories—to insist on representing a variety of lives, loves, and experiences as valuable, deserving, and beautiful.
If you need a break, take one, but don’t give up, don’t look away, because injustice thrives behind closed doors.
There are so many people out there who need you and your creative output right now.
If you need a break, take a break. Give yourself time and give yourself so much grace.
But, eventually, when you have the resources again, push forward.
In pushing forward, you’re adding to a powerful counter-narrative against a society that would reduce people to narrow definitions.
Stand up and show us that there is more than one way to live, love, and be happy, and everyone deserves to find their path to it.
So let’s keep creating. Let’s be loud, and let’s rally through the stories we tell and the connections we make.
